Pruning Roses

Pruning Roses Now?

Pruning Roses can be daunting at first. It is best to prune roses in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Here are the steps to prune your roses:

  1. Remove any dead, diseased, or damaged canes by cutting them back to healthy wood.
  2. Cut back any canes that are crossing or rubbing against each other.
  3. Remove any canes growing from the base of the plant, as these will not produce blooms.
  4. Cut back the remaining canes to about 18-24 inches above an outward-facing bud.
  5. Remove any remaining leaves and debris from the base of the plant.
  6. If you want to keep the roses more compact and bushy, pinch the tips of the remaining canes to encourage branching.

It’s important to note that different varieties of roses have different pruning needs, so be sure to research the specific type you are pruning.
